PR Hiking Routes in Portugal

Pequenas Rotas (short routes) are marked hiking trails of less than 30 kilometres. These hiking routes of less than one day are approved by the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo Portugal (FCMP) and are usually maintained by local councils. These walking trails usually take in local points of interest and are marked by yellow and red. The number refers to the route number at a council level.

How well the PR trails are marked and maintained varies from council to council. It can be hard to find reliable information about local trails, especially in English. Tourist information centres sometimes have written directions or you can try searching PR and the council or region name, for example “PR Arouca” or “PR Arrábida“. If, like me, you aren’t really used to using an actual paper map or don’t like losing the trail on a poorly marked route, I highly recommend the use of a hiking app. I use Wikiloc to help find trails in an area and prevent myself getting lost in the wilderness, but there are a bunch of app options out there.

GR Hiking Routes in Portugal

Grandes Rotas (Great Routes) are for serious hikers. Trails are longer than 30 kilometres and can cross not only various Portuguese councils, but also European countries. For example, the GR11 starts in St Petersburg, Russia, and crosses Europe before finishing at Cabo de São Vicente on the Portuguese coast.  These trails are marked with red and white signage, and the numbers refer to route number at a national or European level.
